Are you disturbed?

I came across this prayer recently, in the funeral program for a friend.

As I read this, I was reminded once again of how complacent my faith can be sometimes.  When life is going well, and there are no bumps in the road, it is easy to take your faith for granted.

As I read through this, and I have read it many times since that funeral, I found a new frontier for my faith.  I now pray often that God will disturb me in my faith, and challenge me to grow stronger.  Since that funeral, I have had the opportunity to help others in times of need.  Each time, I felt calm in the middle of the storm.  I was disturbed physically, but spiritually grounded.

I pray that you will have a chance to be disturbed this week.

In His Service,

Disturb Us, Lord

– Attributed to Sir Francis Drake

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.

We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
